Foundation Areas

All types of gardening are suitable as a teaching resource. Fieldwork Rest and Play have around 15 years worth of experience developing school grounds, with the last 8 specifically showing a large increase in the improvement of foundation areas.

In order for an area to be successful it has to be designed with the activities that will be carried out within it in mind, before structures.

When working with teachers we encourage the following thought process in order to create a successful area:

PLANNING YOUR FOUNDATION/NURSERY GARDEN - A Useful Guide for Teachers

bullet

Design should be “activity led” rather than “structure led”

bullet

A whole area plan should be drawn up regardless of the immediate budget available

bullet

Minimize surface changes

bullet

Consider how the children will move between the activities

bullet

Separation of activities that need a higher level of supervision to one area

bullet

Designs that are inherently safe and easy to supervise

bullet

Designs that are durable and attractive
